Sundown on Golden State manufacturing: jobs at risk?(U.S. OUTLOOK)

California is a microcosm of the state of manufacturing in the U.S. With the sixth-largest economy in the world and 1.5 million manufacturing jobs--70 percent more than runner-up Texas--California faces obstacles common to all states, only bigger. Today it is threatened with the loss of as many as one million production jobs, according to a report by the Bay Area Economic Forum.

The report, assisted by New York-based McKinsey & Company, puts forward an assertive program to not only stop job erosion due in part to outsourcing, but to get foreign and domestic companies to consider expansion or relocation to the Golden State.
