Thoughts that occurred to me on a recent trip through the tech industry's cradle of life--aka, Silicon Valley: The excursion started in San Francisco--site of Oracle OpenWorld, the annual gathering of Oracle customers--where it was apparent that Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison's plan for taking over the world of business computing is on track.

Charles Phillips, one of Oracle's three presidents, opened the conference by boasting that 35,000 customers and partners had shown up for the event. I don't know if that number can be confirmed, but this was the busiest user conference I have attended in more than a decade covering the industry.
