Federal group eyes safety rules: number of ATV-related deaths and injuries has risen as the sport has increased in popularity.

The new year figures to bring a new round of ATV safety recommendations as recently released death and injury statistics continue to concern federal rule-makers.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission's estimated number of deaths involving four-wheel ATVs has risen as the number of those vehicles in use has climbed, according to the federal group's annual report.

The commission estimates 703 deaths were the result of four-wheel ATVs in 2003, up approximately 18% from '02 and 27% from '01. During 2003, the commission estimates ATV use at 6.2 million, an increase of approximately 11% from '02 and nearly 20% from '01.
