Federal government should take lead role on financial literacy.(Brief Article)

The federal government should use its influence and authority to make financial literacy a national priority, according to participants who attended a recent forum convened by the General Accountability Office (GAO).
The government's role, however, should be one of support since a wide variety of state, local, nonprofit and private groups already provide materials and programs on financial education, the participants said. In effect, the government should be "filling the gaps left by others and serving as an unbiased source of information," according to a GAO report on the forum.
Participants recommended that the federal government sponsor a major media campaign and also find ways to make sure existing financial education materials are disseminated...
