The two federal departments with the most early childhood responsibilities are taking more steps to coordinate policies and programs, witnesses told a Senate panel last week.
The Bush administration's Good Start, Grow Smart early childhood program includes initiatives to link the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services, said Raymond Simon, assistant secretary of education. One activity is the Interagency School Readiness Consortium, a $39.5 million initiative to examine the effectiveness of preschool curricula, programs and interventions.
