AOL Fights Class Action.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Internet service provider America Online, charging that the latest version of the company's software prevents customers from using rival Internet services.

For each class member, the suit seeks $1,000 or triple damages, whichever is greater. The suit is also asking that AOL be prevented from distributing its version 5.0 "without full disclosure of the effect of its operation on other software."

The complaint has no basis, according to an AOL spokesman, because the new software allows users to select any service provider as their default Internet connection. The company has received very few customer complaints, he added.
