Dark humor cannot obscure the risk management challenges posed by new health threats. The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and comparable pathogens presents risk managers with new and daunting challenges. SARS is not the only modern pathogen threatening health. Others challenges loom: West Nile disease, monkey pox, hantavirus. Experts predict a flu epidemic in the winter of 2004. Late December 2003 brought the first case of mad cow disease in the United States. Although our discussion here focuses on SARS, the issues and strategies raised may apply to other emerging pathogens....
