Australian Treasurer, Peter Costello, has met vegetable farmer representatives from Tasmania to discuss threats to the industry. Costello said he could take not action against McDonald's Australia for deciding to import french fries from New Zealand, but noted it would be reassuring to consumers if the chain was purchasing Australian products.Costello also noted the Australian Government must ensure labelling laws assist local producers and provide the best information to consumers.
