Aug 9, 2001 (The Australian Financial Review
ABIX via COMTEX) -- Concerns are rising in Australia about domestic companies being sold to offshore buyers. The BHP Billiton merger in mid-2001 has brought the concerns to the fore. The issue, however, is not about the ownership of Australian business. The concern should be that Australia is an attractive environment in which to do business. If the domestic business environment is attractive to offshore investors, then more and more offshore companies will seek to invest their money in Australia. Australia should encourage, not resist, foreign investment.
