Drug testing sparks BHP strike.

Australasian Business Intelligence, September, 2001

Sep 8, 2001 (The Daily Telegraph

ABIX via COMTEX) -- Workers at BHP's Port Kembla plant downed tools on 7 September 2001 over drug testing. The Australian Workers' Union organiser, Andy Gillespie, said employees were concerned that the drug-testing policy had been abused. BHP's flat products acting president, Noel Cornish, said the policy was designed to protect the health and safety of employees. The steel workers will now decide whether or not to continue the strike, which could cost BHP up to $1 million in lost production.
