Labor targets GM food, mobile credit traps in consumer protection plan.

ABIX via COMTEX) -- Increased consumer protection was the theme of policy announcements by the Australian Labor Party on 3 October 2001. Labelling of genetically modified food, a "cooling off" period for consumers who sign sales contracts, and curbing credit offered by telcos were among Labor's policy plans. Greater power for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is also promised. Consumer groups welcomed the statements, but spokesmen said while Labor addresses some of the key issues of consumer concern, not enough policy detail is provided.
