ABIX via COMTEX) -- Smaller Australian web companies will not be required to observe new Australian privacy legislation. The tougher laws to protect the personal privacy of consumers apply from December 2001. However, for a company to be caught in the net, it must have annual turnover of more than $A3 million. The new law means holders of databases must tell users what personal information they hold on them, and how it is being used. It is then up to each user to correct any faults in the files. The CEO of the Australian Internet Industry Association, Peter Coroneos, says that if web companies want to gain the benefits of the association's seal of privacy approval, they will comply.
