ABIX via COMTEX) -- Retailer HMV has announced that it will not offer online music downloads because of Internet piracy in Australia. In November 2001, HMV's UK division joined Japanese and Canadian divisions in offering downloads. In December, the Australian recording industry will increase pressure on the piracy web sites that continue to operate despite the ruling in the US against Napster. The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) will talk with the Internet Industry Association (IIA) about voluntary protocols, whereby internet service providers would be able to close piracy web sites. There has also been criticism that the pricing structure of the recording industry is adding to the piracy problem.
