ABIX via COMTEX) -- The cost of treating Australians who injure themselves while playing sport is greater than the costs of treating obesity. According to a communique to be released by Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) and other sports health experts on 9 December 2001, the Australian Government is not doing enough to tackle the problem, which is costing at least $A1.65 billion a year. Caroline Finch, of Monash University, says around one out of every 17 Australians playing sport or exercising injure themselves seriously enough to prevent them from continuing, while a further five per cent refrain from taking up sport or exercise through fear of getting injured.
