ABIX via COMTEX) -- Media giants, News Corporation and Vivendi, are negotiating an Italian pay-television takeover deal. It is not clear, however, which group will shoulder the burden of a $US2 billion loss incurred by the joint venture. In mid-December 2001, Italian authorities officially blocked the merger of Vivendi's Italian pay-television business, Telepiu, with its rival, Stream. Stream is a joint venture between News and Telecom Italia. Some $US2.5 billion has been invested in the loss-making venture. The head of Vivendi Universal, Jean-Marie Messier, said that the French group is now close to a deal to take full control of Stream.
