ABIX via COMTEX) -- Global sponsorship is the key to financial success in sport. The Australian swimmer, Ian Thorpe, is estimated to have earned $A1.3m from sponsorships in 2000 and $A2.5m in 2001 after signing agreements with Adidas and the Japanese television broadcaster, TV Asahi. Australia's most highly-paid sportsman is the golfer, Greg Norman.
