ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian competition regulator is assessing if a takeover of Austar will reduce telephony competition. It appears that Austar and its potential suitor, Singtel Optus, have sought an opinion on their merger from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). There are precedents for such an approach. The future of Austar, Australia's only regional pay television operator, is also becoming highly political. It would appear that the ACCC may be ultimately responsible for Austar's fate as a merger with Singtel Optus could create better competition for Telstra as an Internet service provider and stave off financial problems that confront Austar over the repayment of a $A400m debt.
