Australasian Business Intelligence, February, 2002

Feb 23, 2002 (The Australian Financial Review

ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is about to launch a crackdown on business activity statements (BAS). In the next few weeks it will send out thousand of letters to corporate taxpayers who have failed to lodge their BAS. The Tax Commissioner, Michael Carmody, told the Senate estimates committee that from 1 July 2002, the ATO would move into enforcement mode. He also identified a number of areas where business behaviour was "pretty unacceptable". The computer, smash repair and road freight sectors were among a number of industries that were said to require continuous monitoring.
