ABIX via COMTEX) -- Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) have succeeded relay control systems in industrial motion control. Cahners research indicates that PLCs have a market share of installations of more than 80 per cent. The research also found that 55 per cent of respondents employ personal computers (PC) in motion control applications. National Instruments' Shawn Liu notes that there is a trend toward sophisticated input-output hardware among PC users. Liu says that PC-based control systems are used in numerous situations, including preventative maintenance. He says that flexibility is the prime advantage of PC-based systems.
