Music giants fined to the tune of $1m.

ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian Federal Court has found Universal Music and Warner Music guilty of unfair practices that restrict competition within the music industry. The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) began a legal battle with the music giants when it discovered that local retailers had been coerced to refrain from importing CDs. Justice Graham Hill fined Universal Music $A545,000, and Warner Music $A540,000 for using their industry clout to discourage the legitimate practice of parallel importing. Sony Music had also been accused of similar charges by the ACCC, but avoided a legal fight by settling out of court in April 2001.
