ABIX via COMTEX) -- The upturn in the Australian building materials sector has benefited many domestic cyclical businesses. Results released during the February-March 2002 reporting season have defied market forecasts. Analysts have been saying the domestic construction market is at a 10-year low. Boral, however, boosted its profits by 30 per cent in the six months to 31 December 2001. Strong results were also reported by Adelaide Brighton, Amcor and Coates Hire. Economists are predicting that the sector's strong performance will continue, given the time lag in the first-home buyers' grant and indications of a recovery in the US.
