ABIX via COMTEX) -- Before Foxtel and Singtel Optus can begin celebrating their pay-television deal, approval must be granted by the consumer watchdog. While the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) concedes that subscribers with be winners in the short term, it is concerned that the merger will give Foxtel a disproportionate hold of the pay-television market. According to Bob Peters, of Global Media Analysis, the Foxtel-Optus deal came about due to the global downturn in the media industry. Peters firmly believes that a rejection of the deal would be an "absolute tragedy" for Australia's pay-television market.
