Business Services Industry
Networks the losers in the pay-TV war.
Australasian Business Intelligence, March, 2002
Mar 9, 2002 (The Australian
ABIX via COMTEX) -- The future of pay television services will be determined by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The proposed merger between Foxtel and Singtel Optus faces scrutiny by the regulator and if the competition policy appears infringed by the proposal, then Singapore Telecommunications will close Singtel Optus. It is more probable that the ACCC will attempt to gain greater power from the Australian Government rather than denying the merger proposal. The deal means a lot to Telstra Corporation as well given that it is a 50 stakeholder in Foxtel. The Seven Network will presumably gain access to the cable system under any deal approved by the ACCC.
