Foxtel plan hit by record opposition.
Australasian Business Intelligence, April, 2002
Apr 11, 2002 (The Australian Financial Review
ABIX via COMTEX) -- The proposed Foxtel and SingTel Optus pay television alliance in Australia has sparked widespread opposition. Allan Fels, chairman of the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC), said on 11 April 2002 that a record number of submissions opposing the plan have been received. The deadline for submissions is 12 April 2002. It is known that Seven Network, the Ten Network and major newspaper publisher, John Fairfax Holdings, have fired off written objections. They are concerned that Foxtel partners, Publishing & Broadcasting (PBL) and News Corporation, will gain monopoly control over access to the cable network of Telstra, which is Foxtel's 50 per cent owner.
