ABIX via COMTEX) -- Large American airlines have stopped paying base commissions to US and Canadian travel agents. Air Canada, American Airlines, Continental North West Airlines and Delta eliminated the commissions as part of cost reduction initiatives introduced in the wake of the US terrorist attacks. Peter Lowry, the president of the Travel Agents Association of New Zealand, noted that the country's agents have fared "better than most" during the airline sector crisis. Lowry said it remains to be seen how New Zealand agents will fit into the worldwide picture. He said consumer confidence will be central to future industry trends.
