ABIX via COMTEX) -- The software products of both Microsoft and Oracle corporation are proprietary systems. This means that, unlike with open source software on which there are no restriction relating to its being licensed, enhanced or customised, Microsoft and Oracle keep their software source codes secret, have control over changes and collect the licensing fees. US Department of Defense chief information officer, John Stenbit, says Microsoft has been lobbying it to discontinue using open source software and switch to proprietary systems on the grounds that open source software is a threat to security and copyright.
