ABIX via COMTEX) -- The results of a study linking geography with osteoporosis indicate rural dwellers have a third fewer bone fractures than those in the city. The likely reasons are the increased exposure to sunlight that a country lifestyle often provides, and more exercise. The geographic factor was most pronounced among rural men, who had 40 per cent fewer hip fractures than city dwellers. For women, the figure was reduced to 18 per cent. The University of Melbourne study examined 2,000 people with fractures in Geelong, and the coastal resort towns of Lorne and Torquay. Exposure to sunlight increases concentrations of vitamin D, which aids in calcium uptake and increases bone density and muscle mass.
