May 08, 2002 (The Australian Financial Review

ABIX via COMTEX) -- A panel will review competition law in Australia. In May 2002, it has been revealed that the panel of three will be headed by retired High Court judge, Daryl Dawson. The panel will review laws which govern the way that very large firms use, or misuse, their market power. The laws governing mergers will be reviewed. The panel will examine the way that the law is administered by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). Dawson was regarded as a conservative judge, with an outstanding reputation for professionalism and integrity. Big businesses in Australia resent some of the actions taken by the ACCC and do not want it to have stronger powers.
