ABIX via COMTEX) -- Moderate drinkers earn more than abstainers or heavy drinkers, according to new research. The results of the survey of 5,705 full-time male workers were published in Australia's "The Economic Record". Garry Barrett, of the University of New South Wales, was the author. The findings supported the hypothesis that moderate alcohol consumption improves men's health and effectiveness at work. The earnings of heavy drinkers were significantly lower. Moderate drinkers were concentrated in manufacturing, services and professions, while heavy drinkers were mostly in construction or trades. The study used data from the Australian National Health Survey for 1989-90.
