European shippers act over US west coast strike threat.
Australasian Business Intelligence, June, 2002
ABIX via COMTEX) -- European shippers are bracing for an International Longshoremen's & Warehouseman's Union strike at ports on the US west coast. They are reportedly disembarking US-bound containers at ports on the US east coast and the Gulf of Mexico to avoid finding ports shut if unions strike. The strike could happen as early as July 2002,
when the union's labour agreement with ports expires. Shipping lines on the Australia-US west coast trades have yet to panic, noting that it is common for negotiations between ports and the union to be resolved only at the last minute.
