Labor defends watchdog.

Australasian Business Intelligence, June, 2002

ABIX via COMTEX) -- A defence of the competition watchdog in Australia has been mounted. In June 2002, Australian Labor Party Opposition communications spokesman, Lindsay Tanner, defended the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission. He said that if "de facto monopolies" were allowed to rule in Australia, business would feel the effects of the lack of competition. He added that the watchdog's monitoring of telco Telstra and airline Qantas Airways had helped secure lower prices for consumers. Tanner said that if monopolies developed, then the outcome would be higher input costs for business. Tanner believes that business will always seek to avoid regulation.
