Big guns race to roll out tablet PCs.

ABIX via COMTEX) -- A new, smaller style of mobile computer is about to hit the market. The "Tablet PC's" are about the size of a normal paper pad and allow information to be written directly onto the screen. Hewlett-Packard (HP) announced in late June 2002 that a Compaq Evo Tablet PC will be available later in the year. It will use a Transmeta Crusoe TM5800 processor. Other manufacturers including Toshiba, Fujitsu and Acer are believed to be adopting the concept. Tim Bajarin, of US analyst Creative Strategies, said it will take years to develop the new smaller hardware but the Tablet PC still has a good chance of becoming the preferred platform for mobile computer users. It will need the support of retailers as well as excellent operating software, he said.
