Quantum leap for medicine.

Australasian Business Intelligence, June, 2002

ABIX via COMTEX) -- A new medical diagnostic instrument uses superconductivity and quantum mechanics. The new tool, called superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), can detect extremely week magnetic fields such as produced by the human body. SQUID-based sensors have already been used to diagnose haemochromotosis. The SQUID sensors, built by Tristan Technologies of San Diego, are used in Germany and Italy and will be soon marketed in the United States. Another SQUID machine was developed in Japan. It is designed to be used to detect fluctuations in the magnetic fields produced by the heart.
