Labor backs Fels as Costello sticks with big business.
Australasian Business Intelligence, July, 2002
ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian Labor Party (ALP) has strongly defended the Australian corporate regulator. On 3 July 2002, the ALP's shadow treasurer, Bob McMullan, said the party would not support any changes to the law that diminished the authority of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) chairman, Allan Fels, or the ACCC's ability to protect small business and consumers. McMullan is at odds with the Australian Treasurer, Peter Costello, who earlier criticised the ACCC's use of the media to curb the powers of big business.
