ABIX via COMTEX) -- Some female Australian public servants are being made to begin maternity leave six weeks before the birth. Sexual Discrimination Commissioner, Pru Goward, says such action could be illegal because, while that was the 1973 law, it was overridden by the 1984 Sex Discrimination Act. In a recent case, the ABC made a television journalist begin her leave six weeks before her baby was due, but the head of employment services, Tim Burrows, says the ABC was within the law. The Community & Public Sector Union's assistant national secretary, Margaret Gillespie, says most women prefer to take as much leave as possible after the birth, and a spokesman for the public service workers' compensation insurer, Comcare, says...
