Australian pay TV operator Foxtel will spend $A600m converting its services to digital, making up to 480 channels available. The move to expand the current 50 channels is designed to allay fears that its integration with Singtel Optus would create an anticompetitive situation, as suggested by the Australian Competition & Consumers Commission (ACCC) when the plan was first proposed. Foxtel would allow competitors access to its network and programs and cap the basic retail rate of $A47.95 for three years. However, the deal will likely face opposition from other media companies, and will be scrutinised by the ACCC.
