BHP scents spice in Indian metal star.
Australasian Business Intelligence, September, 2002

BHP Billiton will be one of an expected 12 companies bidding for an interest in Indian aluminium entity Nalco. The Indian company is being privatised, and the Indian Government has called for expressions of interest for a 29 per cent stake in the company. Nalco has 300 million tonnes of bauxite reserves and is one of the world's lowest-cost aluminium producers, because of captive energy and transportation facilities. BHP Billiton's rivals for the stake, which is expected to fetch $A1.1bn, include Rio Tinto, Alcoa, Alcan, Pechiney and Companhia Vale do Rio Doce.
