John Fairfax Holdings and Rural Press have denied reports that they are discussing a $A3 billion merger. The two Australian media groups issued statements to the Australian Stock Exchange on 16 September 2002 dismissing the reports. Rural Press chairman John B Fairfax said recently that he was looking for acquisition and merger opportunities with other media groups. Speculation centred on APN News & Media and West Australian Newspaper Holdings. Rural Press's market value is $A636 million, while John Fairfax is worth $A2.3 billion.
