US hopes hang on key business index.

Financial markets are hoping for evidence of an improvement in US manufacturing. The US Institute for Supply Management (ISM) index of manufacturing for August 2002 is due to be released on 3 September. Other data released recently on the US economy has been confusing. Financial markets are looking to the ISM index, the only national measurement of US manufacturing, to provide a clearer picture of the state of the economy. The index is also one of the key measurements considered by the US Federal Reserve when it sets interest rates. The index declined sharply in July. Commentators are looking for a slight improvement in August.
