A Western Australian professor is the first academic to be named Telstra Australian businesswoman of the year. She is Linda Kristjanson, the communications, health and science associate dean at Edith Cowan University. She won the 2002 award out of a field of 31 finalists, which included Macquarie University's vice-chancellor, Di Yerbury, who was New South Wales businesswoman of the year. Kristjanson was Australia's first professor of palliative care. She has been instrumental in developing a night respite program for families caring for patients with advanced cancer as well as a web site for children who know someone with cancer.
