In early October 2002, Macquarie University has completed research into the costs associated with raising a family in Australia. Factors such as child care, food, health, housing and transport were all taken into consideration. According to Paul Henman, a sociologist involved in the project, it costs Victorian couples roughly $A214,700 to raise a child to the age of 18, making Victorian children the most expensive to raise. The study also found that it cost an estimated $A210,900 to raise a child in the Australian Capital Territory, while the costs of a single child in South Australia were around $A180,700. Raising a child in Sydney tends to set parents back around $A182,300.
