The face of pay-TV in Australia has been changed. The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) has approved a massive content-sharing deal between Singtel Optus and Foxtel. This will increase the number of channels available to subscribers and reduce costs for the struggling operators. The deal will begin on 1 December 2002 and will also allow Telstra (a part-owner of Foxtel) to bundle pay-TV, telephony and Internet services. The ACCC approved the deal only after legally enforceable undertakings were given by the operators, which will ensure that smaller players have opportunities in the pay-TV arena. The deal has not been welcomed by the Seven and Ten Networks and John Fairfax Holdings.
