The Australian Senate is likely to increase its scrutiny of the Telecommunications Competition Bill. This follows the decision by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) on 13 November 2002 to endorse an alliance between Australia's two leading pay-TV groups, Foxtel and SingTel Optus. Australia's biggest telco, Telstra, owns 50 per cent of Foxtel. The Australian Democrats party's media spokesman, John Cherry, says his party believes pay-TV access should be protected by legislation. He is surprised the ACCC is prepared to accept undertakings by the parties instead.
