ACTU threatens strike if maternity leave fails.

The ACTU has threatened to take industrial action if the Australian Government does not adopt a proposed maternity leave scheme. In December 2002, Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Pru Goward, suggested that new mothers be permitted to take 14 weeks' paid leave. She claimed that working mothers should receive $A431 for each week of leave. Donald Johnston, of the OECD, says Australia and the US are currently the only nations involved in the OECD which do not offer paid maternity leave. Johnston claims that "affordable childcare" is also important. ACTU secretary, Greg Combet, says the union will mount an industrial campaign if the government fails to accept Goward's "safety net".
