Researchers in the US claim they have developed a sonic refrigerator, which uses thermo-acoustic technology to keep food cold. The technology will provide an alternative to chemical coolants and is environmentally-friendly, according to the researchers at Pennsylvania State University. Sound waves act as pistons compressing stable gases such as helium, rather than the fluorocarbons currently used. As compression occurs heat is absorbed. Although the sound waves can attain 173 decibels the sound is contained within the system. A spokesman for Australasian whitegoods manufacturer, Fisher & Paykel, was sceptical on whether new technology could produce efficiencies equal to existing systems.
