ANZ joins forestry fray.

Australasian Business Intelligence, December, 2002

The ANZ Banking Group held its annual meeting on 13 December 2002. The bank's chairman, Charles Goode, discussed the company's attitude to environmental issues. This followed questioning about ANZ's exposure to forestry and logging group, Gunns. ANZ has loaned about $A250m to Gunns, which has drawn criticism from ANZ shareholders due to its practice of logging old-growth forests and exporting woodchips. Goode has indicated that he will visit Gunns' forest sites in Tasmania early in 2003. ANZ's directors will also hold a strategy meeting on environmental issues in 2003.
