Telstra will issue its third annual environmental report in December 2002. Paul Baulch, the Australian telco's general manager of health, safety and the environment, says big companies have a responsibility to engage in "whole of life-cycle environmental planning". Telstra has saved the equivalent of 21,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases at its 10,000 sites Australia-wide. Its telephone book "muncher" program has achieved a 65 per cent recycling rate. Baulch says Telstra has also maintained employment standards at its in-house call centres. The "digital divide" issue darkens the telco's corporate responsibility reputation.
