Watchdog checks pre-paid phone cards.
Australasian Business Intelligence, December, 2002
Dec 26, 2002 (The Courier-Mail - ABIX via COMTEX)
The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) has launched an investigation of pre-paid mobile telephones. The ACCC is concerned that some of the supposedly "hassle-free" pre-paid deals offered by Singtel Optus and Telstra lock unsuspecting consumers in for as much as two years and charge punishing exit fees. Both companies defend their deals, saying that consumers are well-educated about the lock-in conditions. Rival major mobile telephone carriers, Vodafone Mobile and Virgin Mobile (Australia), are not being targeted by the ACCC investigation.
