Fibre-Optics: a place to "live" in gas lines?

Australasian Business Intelligence, December, 2002

Gas pipelines, researchers in the US have found, provide a safe conduit for fibre-optic cables. These cables can be for the transmission of telecommunications services. Research was conducted by the US-based Gas Technology Institute (GTI). It ran field demonstrations in Texas in May 2002, in association with the Sempra Fibre Links subsidiary of Sempra Energy. Gas ignition is eliminated by the use of non-conducting insulation fibre in the optic fibre casing. GTI has another three fibre-optic systems, proposed for gas pipe installation, to evaluate as it has done with the Sempra Fibre Links system.
