The New South Wales Government will pay almost $A140,000 for the actor, Christopher Reeve, to address a conference in Sydney. Apart from the appearance fee, Reeve, a quadriplegic since a horse-riding accident in 1995, will receive free travel from Qantas Airways and free accommodation from tourism agencies. Disability groups in New South Wales state those funds would be better used to pay for wheelchairs, with 300 people on the waiting list, some for over a year. However, the state's Premier, Bob Carr, said funding for disabilities had increased to $A658m annually. Public transport had been modified to accommodate the disabled, he said.
